Work Where you Play; Love Where you Work – When you move to a rural town

More people than ever are leaving big cities and choosing to live in more rural settings. Anyone that makes the move, will be living there, working there, and playing there – but at the same time, will be collecting a paycheck from a big city corporation, and makes a direct injection of cash into the local rural economy.

COVID-19 has brought with it an unprecedented shift in how people view work, and how they approach work/life balance. All across the world, office workers are realizing that being in an office at the company headquarters isn’t nearly as important as they thought it was. At the same time, employers are coming to the conclusion that they don’t need 100% of their employees in the office, and that there are significant benefits to allowing workplace flexibility to their workers.

Amidst all of this, there is a growing number of people that aren’t as comfortable as they once were with being in a big city surrounded by large crowds.

The Financial Services Union (FSU) has written to Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise Leo Varadkar calling for Government backing for rules on remote working, which is expected to remain a permanent feature of the economy following the Covid-19 crisis.

The union is calling for increased allowances for employees working from home, sufficient IT and other equipment, legislation for the right of workers to disconnect after office hours, and four-day working weeks with no changes to pay for people in the financial industry “in recognition of work intensity”.

Some employees are afraid of ‘rocking the boat’ when experiencing a toxic time at work. This creates a real concern on the effectiveness of counter measures put in place by organisations that desires to address this source of workplace emotional drain.

Why should millions of people face abusive supervisors and bullies at work? While direct interactions […]

Defeat of Mr Compliance HR and Rise Of Chief Wellbeing Officer?

The Rise Of The Chief Wellbeing Officer

Few years ago, some HR practitioners were labelled as offering ‘parenting HR’ simply because they supported employees wellbeing. Yet, in these unprecedented times, comprehensive wellbeing (mental, emotional, physical, financial and professional) in the workplace is so important. But who will take care of employees wellbeing when HR doesn’t want to?

How we support ourselves, and how we support others within our businesses – such as business partners, clients and contacts – is crucial. The good news is that companies are progressively making the care of their people a top priority.

Does this mean there is a new opportunity to create a C-suite position and prioritize wellbeing rather than burying the position in the traditionally compliance-based HR function? The answer is yes, and many health systems across the country are already establishing a new executive position, what they call a Chief Wellness Officer, as a strategy to address the burnout epidemic among physicians and other clinicians.

Now that this will gradually get off HR coverage and be managed by emerging Wellness Officers, HR might just be getting another ‘return to intensive care unit’ advise. Like every other profession, a chunk of what is traditional HR roles are getting digitized, and frontline managers are being encouraged to handle some other critical HR duties.

Fears Surrounds ‘New Normal’ from Coronavirus Business Unusual

Business Unusual – How Covid-19 Will Change Work Forever

At this time, there is a grey area around the greatest source of fear among various worklife issues. While some have lost their job and have serious concern on how to pay their bills, some fear they may soon loss their job, loss the new freedom from working from home once they go back to work or the fear of getting the virus at work or when commuting to work.

Fears surrounding job losses because of the impact of Covid-19 cannot be underplayed. And even if staff haven’t been directly affected by the current pandemic, there’s every chance that the isolation associated with lockdown and the extra pressures on family life and finances will either engender new mental health problems, or exacerbate existing issues for many workers.

So if companies want to retain skilled staff, they’ll have to pay more than lip service to workplace mental health – not only with initiatives like employee assistance counselling services, but also through retraining managers to lead with more emotional intelligence and offering much more flexible working hours and conditions.
